Back To School Planning for Parents
So, as most of you are already into the swing of the "back to school"
routine... we are just getting ready to begin that process next week.
It's hard to believe that summer is already over and we are off and
running for the count down until Christmas.
I can't believe that there is an official website for that... actually
I can... it just never ceases to amaze me what you find on the web.I was going through some back issues of Real Simple and I clipped out this super article from Modern Manners (Sept 2006)... it was entitled "Lesson Plan for Parents."
I
remember when I was in grade school... we actually had each one of our
teachers over for lunch within the first few months of school starting.
Just kind of a "get to know you thing" that my mom (who was a teacher)
would do... she made her very memorable (what we called) "Teacher
Chicken Casserole" and we would spend the meal eating on the good china
and get to know each other.
Good manners or kissing up? Any more I wonder...
I
loved this article because they really give you a good list of "do's
and don'ts" if you will, on getting the school year off on the right
foot.
1. Do introduce
yourself (said parent or guardian) to the teacher within the first week
of school. Establish the channels of communications from day one!
2. If you have concerns about your child or the teacher (or another student)... don't bring them up at the open house or back to school night. It's better to meet one on one for private discussions.
3. Do
make sure to talk to lunchroom supervisors, monitors or other teachers
if you are having a situation with another child. Especially if the
problem isn't getting resolved.
4. Don't
over commit yourself to frequent events if your schedule doesn't allow
it. Realize your boundries and that you can't do everything! Enjoy what
you can do.
5. Do make sure to meet with the teachers, even if you don't agree with their teaching methods or styles. You are a team after all.
6. Don't ask the teacher questions about your child when you bump into them out at the market or at the movies.
7. Do speak to the teacher if you have concerns with your child's placement. Communication is key!
8. Don't ever send them to school with cupcakes! Make sure to check school policy first!
