My Pet Project: Nina's Books of Love
I have come to a point in my life where wanting to define myself is important to me. I don't know if it's because I have kids or that I am feeling my age has allowed me to step outside myself and look in at what is there.
When I look in the mirror I am always fairly content with what I see. I always try to give a little more, and try a little harder in hopes that I can somehow see goodness spread through the world. Sometimes this will catch up with me in my workload or my schedule. But my feeling is that we are only on this earth for so long... let's make the most of it!
A year ago this past December, a dear friend of our family died from a devastating disease called Fanconi Anemia. I can not clearly define what it is or really does, I just know it's very bad. The saddest part of this story is that she was only 3 1/2 years old. We met Nina (that is her name) when she was about 6 months old (or somewhere close to that) at our local library story time. In the entire time that of Nina's life, I watched her family go through many surgeries, sick days at home ans tremendous stress of dealing with this disease. Did I mention that they also have an older son too(who is now... I think 10).
All I can say is that in the short time I knew Nina, I learned more from her than I have learned in my lifetime. So, now it's my turn to give a little something back to this world... for her!
Nina's love for books was so charming. She spent many days in the hospital waiting rooms and recovery and there was always a sense of relief when there were books laying around to read. So this is where Nina's Books of Love was born.
I decided I wanted to see about getting some books to donate to the hospital. So in my usual fashion, I dove right in. When I started, my goal was not wanting this to be any work, or feel like it was a burden. Doing something to make life better should NEVER be a burden, work or difficult. It's making life better for you or for someone else! So far, it hasn't been. We have been successful in getting a few books... well, okay, like 500 and then some. I have to say that it's amazing what you can accomplish when you really put your mind to it.
Feel free to check out my blog on the book drive or if you feel like donating... the information is posted there. This is not a plug to get donations... there is a point...
What is the point you ask?
Giving can be what you make it. If it's to yourself or an organization it doesn't have to be work or even hard. Make it what you want and you will achieve success!
