Kick It Up a Notch
Do you like the Food Network? I do... it's kind of like a secret hobby that I will never indulge into... cooking.
love all the shows about all the different types of food, styles of cooking and how your cooking style is really all about your personality.
Take Emeril Lagasse. If you have ever watched one of his shows he is so loud, passionate, robust... and he really puts himself out there. He is from New Orleans and has a southern/sassy style for most of his cooking. Not to mention... he likes it HOT! For a while he was doing the Crest cinnamon toothpaste commercials... it's the one where he would yell BAM!! from the bathroom as he was brushing his teeth.
Another phrase he is known for is kick it up a notch. Usually referring to the heat of a dish... adding another dash of pepper or maybe some hot sauce.
I love that... kick it up a notch! I say it with my kids a lot when I am trying to get the to understand how to do things a little bit better for themselves. Sometimes I find myself saying that when I am planning something for someone (or even myself) when I want things to be just a little bit better or nicer. It says a lot about my personality... kick it up a notch... I like setting the expectation for something and then... taking it to the next level. I think secretly we all would like to be able to do that...
Take the NAPO-LA Organizing Awards for instance (do you even know what that is?) That is really kicking it up a notch! They have really identified our industry as not just stay at home parents needing a project, but men and women striving for excellence in a growing and demanding industry. People like Peter Walsh, Julie Morgenstern, Dorothy Breininger, Linda Koopersmith all who've stood out in excellence (or as I like to say have "kicked it up a notch") in my industry.
I frequently find myself talking about expectations and organizing with clients, friends, family or the lady standing behind me in the grocery store. The conversation goes very much the same (well, with family it's a little different... I can be a little more frank with them), what are your expectations? what do you want for yourself?
Once you have identified your goals, and identified the steps that you need to take to get there. Start with something simple and then.... KICK IT UP A NOTCH.
What is something you would like to kick up a notch?
