TIP OF THE WEEK: Goog411

So, as I mentioned a few posts ago... my husband thinks I have been drinking a little bit too much of the "Google Kool-Aid". Well, to my defense, I do have a bit of a crush on Google, but what's not to love?

If you haven't seen this yet... Google has a FREE 411 Service. Check out the short video here. Now, I haven't tried it yet, but the video is quite impressive. I myself have had those moments where I need a phone number and there isn't a book or computer in sight. Why not go mobile with my new best friend Google! Enjoy!

Megan, I adore 800-GOOG-411. I use it all the time in the car. I love that it's free (I hate paying for Information on my cell pone), and I love that you can ask for a category of businesses. In my experience it works great! Now, if they'll only add non-business listings, it'd be perfect.

Fabulous tip, Megan! In Monica Ricci terms, Google 411 is your new "BFF!" Right?

You have many choices for "free" voice-based directory assistance - about 8 different services that I know of. They all have different features. If you try several of them, you may even find that you'll add more than one to your phone directory! Grin! If you're interested, as an example, try 1-800-YELLOWPAGES (1-800-935-5697). This one allows you to search by name for PEOPLE, in addition to businesses and government numbers. You can also search by "type of business" like using your yellow pages phone book. The thing I like most is that there's always an operator, for the cases when the automation doesn't understand me.

No matter which one your prefer right now, I recommend trying them all every couple of months to see what's new!

Great tip Megan. Thanks for sharing! I've just programmed it into my phone and will pass along the idea to others as well. I too would love to see a comprable free service for residential listings ... I bet its not too far off in the future.

    Hi Debbie,
Try 1-800-YellowPages (800-935-5697) - you can look up residential in addition to business and government listings. Also, there are a couple of other free directory assistance services that offer residential.

I am all about the Google kool aid.
I use the SMS Google function. It works the same way, only using text messaging (and it's free). Just text your request to 466453. Use something like: movies 97212 or weather 98682. If you need a phone number, put in the name and city you are looking for. I usually get what I need, and if I am en route somewhere, I can call them and get directions.
    LOVE that!
