TIP OF THE WEEK: managing the mail clutter

Mail clutter seems to be an ever growing problem in our society. Me, I think I might be a little weird (shocker, I know).  I love love love my mail... each envelope, magazine, and credit card solicitation... brings me joy!

Sadly though (for those that hate mail) we are in the height of political season, so it’s not going to get better! Here are three steps to processing the mail quickly and keeping the counters clear.

A great way to manage the mail clutter is to first, ensure you have ONE LOCATION in your home where mail is processed. This can be a spot in the kitchen, at your workstation or maybe in the entryway. Make sure you have all your necessary TOOLS at your processing station (garbage can, recycling can, shredder, envelope opener etc.) so you can efficiently sort through the paper quickly and easily without searching for needed items.

When the mail comes in do a QUICK SORT. Toss out all the junk mail, items you won’t read into the recycling can and be sure your personal information hits the shredder!

Finally, you should put bills or items requiring follow up into your ACTION file, items to read in your REVIEW (or READ) file, and reference documents into your TO BE FILED file.

This should eliminate all your mail, allow you to file paperwork accordingly and keep your counters clear!

You ARE weird, girl! The only person I know who likes to open junk mail like credit card applications.

I hate opening any mail unless it's a handwritten letter/card. Or an invitation to a party for the "cool" kids...oh, wait...I don't ever get any of those!

Yes, yes.. I love my mail and I will tell you why....

Junk mail gives me marketing ideas... I like to see what other businesses do to catch my attention.

Magazines, well they speak for themselves, they are my addiction... as most of you know so I love any mag, catalog or advertisement that comes in the mail.

Credit Card solicitations, well those are my pet peeve, but sometimes I like to mail them back empty... just for fun, but really they sometimes have good marketing ideas in there too...

Then there is all the other stuff... it's just fun to see who has my name!
