Five tips for a traveling holiday

Are you traveling this holiday week?

Having to pack up and bring all your "stuff" to another destination can be just as stressful as hosting a large event at your own house.

Our family is heading over to the in-laws for this Thanksgiving. Mom is doing all the "hot" stuff and I am bringing some of the sides. In addition to my side dishes, I have to think about two kids and a hubby to pack up for as well.

In my opinion, the key to a successful and stress free holiday is preparation!

There is nothing worse than having to stop at a store on Thanksgiving day. So to avoid those last minute stops, here are five tips to remember when traveling for a holiday:

  1. Start planning TODAY. Don't think that tasks will get done the morning you have to leave. There will be so much going on to get out the door, you have to start planning ahead, so start now!
  2. Make your list. Sit down and jot out what you need to bring. Anticipate all the "what if" situations, unexpected weather changes or entertainment for the car. The key is to plan.
  3. Pre-make. If you have to bring  a dish, make it the night before. Put it in the fridge along with any serving utensils  you might need to go with it. Have the travel container all ready to go on the counter so that you can just grab and go.
  4. Pre-pack. Pack the car the night before. If you have extra baggage, it's nice to not have to worry about forgetting something when it's already in the car.
  5. The last minute. This is always the time where I do the "oh yeah, I forgot about that." Usually, it's never more than a couple last minute things to do (usually it's pouring a cup of coffee for the road). If you plan ahead, your last minute might actually be just a minute. You might actually get out the door when you expected to because you planned ahead!
