Have a waste free year...

I love anything reusable!!!!

With two growing boys, it seems like nothing really lasts very long at our house. When I can reuse something and make it last longer (or re-purpose) it always makes life that much simplier. It's amazing the amount of waste these boys can accumulate in a day... it kind of scares me for what things will be like when they are teenagers.

I want them to understand why they should be environmentally conscience so as they grow, it then becomes a  habit (unlike their mom who has had to learn better ways of living along the way). I love things like shopping bags, water bottle, lunch bags etc., anyway that I can reduce waste the better!

One of my favorite "eco-candy stores" is Reuseablebags.com. I love to window shop and drool at all the fancy new gadgets and tools. They have tons of information to help educate people on sustainability and eco-friendly living.  I encourage you to subscribe to their eNewsletter. Last week, they sent a list of their Top 10 Tips for a Less Wasteful 2009. You can read their entire article here, but here are my personal top five that I like:

1. Bring your own cup or bottle
2. Bag the sandwich bag
3. Carry a reusable shopping bag
4. Say no to gift wrap
5. Ditch the dryer sheet

If you have been reading my Yes to Less series, you know how much I love the idea of LESS... Personally, the idea of no more dryer sheets just gives me goosebumps, after all, I probably use 15 each week! I will be sure to add the dryer ball to my list of "needs" for this year... SAY YES TO LESS WASTE!

In what way can you reduce your waste this year?

    Hi Megan,
Great information and reminders! My sister recently brought over her birthday gift to my son wrapped in the Sunday funnies paper. I forget we did that in our family.

Back in the 60's and 70's My dad was head of the Land Conservation and Development Commission (LCDC) and involved in DEQ here in Portland, so I was introduced early on to eco friendly ways. However, I had forgotten about the "funnies" recycling for gift paper though! It's great way to reuse the newspaper before it goes in the recycling bin!
